life update:

Care package from my Dad // Blankets outside the pub // Tom // McKroket

Being Dutch with his Stroopwafel // Birthday Cake // Cognac and wine // Battered Mars Bars
So last weekend, my friend Tom came to visit. Unfortunately it was quite cold whilst he was here, but we still sat outside a bar which has tables and chairs moored to a boat on the canal all the way through the year. Most bars provide blankets here, so we helped ourselves to some and enjoyed a few beers on the canal all wrapped up! On Saturday we went to Amsterdam, and on Sunday we went to The Hague.

Monday was my 22nd birthday. It wasn’t the greatest birthday ever, but it wasn’t the worst either. I felt a little forgotten and a little homesick! My Dad gave me the money for a flight home, so at least that’s something to look forward to – Dutch Universities don’t have Easter holidays, and the thought of being constantly at University until July from January was staring me in the face a little. Tom bought me a cake, my Mum sent candles and we had cake for breakfast before I took him to the airport!

Afterwards, I cycled down to a friends house and we drank cognac and red wine and ate fried food – typically Dutch food with battered mars bars – not so Dutch. At the moment, my half of the flats in my old halls are being demolished, and one of my friends and his flat are currently spending all their spare time going into the old flats to see if there’s been anything of value left inside them – this is where a full bottle of cognac came from. Every day they’re coming back with bags of stuff, and before I knew it I was inside them. But the electricity has been cut off, and so you’re walking around with a torch and some of the flats have been trashed by their old owners and some flats don’t have walls anymore, and some have scary messages written on the walls in red paint. Safe to say I soon shat my pants and ended up back at home!

This week seems to have involved a lot of drinking. On Friday night we headed out to one of Leidens clubs (out of two!) for an International Party. They’re always terrible, Eurotrash music anyone? Plus it was dress as what you wanted to be when you grow up – I wanted to sell chickens in Asda, so I gave that one a miss…What would you have dressed as?

  1. Despite battered mars bars being a Scottish invention I'm yet to try one, I really want to though oh my I bet they're amazing. I'm glad that you enjoyed your birthday. I'd hate not having an easter holiday, I'm counting down the days until mine! x

    1. they're pretty good to be fair! i really don't think i'd turn one down, despite their horrific calorie content! always best if you manage to get one that doesn't taste like fish though! yeah, it's nice to have something to break it all up! x

  3. Aw I'm sorry you felt forgotten on your birthday. When I studied in Germany I didn't get a single card or present on my birthday and it felt a lot worse than I thought it would. I hope you had a nice time in Amsterdam and The Hague - I'd love to go!
